This article will address both Candida and Mold toxicity. Since these are both types of fungus, the protocols are the same, using antifungal herbs and a diet that starves off and flushes out the invading fungus. Both mold and candida infections are often overlooked in conventional medicine.
What is Candida
Candidiasis, commonly referred to as “candida,” is a fungal infection that can affect men and women and children of all ages in various parts of the body. It most commonly occurs in the mouth, ears, nose, toenails, fingernails, gastrointestinal tract and vagina.
We all have billions of differnet organisms living within us. Some are beneficial and some are not. Usually, the beneficial organisms keep the bad ones in check. But when an overgrowth of the bad organisms happens, thats when we can have all sorts of problems. Over-use of antibiotics and other prescription and OTC medications can cause the good bacteria in our bodies to diminish, leaving us vulnerable to an overgrowth of pathogens like Candida.
Possible symptoms of candida overgrowth include but are not limited to:
- Bad breath
- Persistent heartburn
- Arthritis
- Sugar cravings
- Brain fog
- Rashes
- Ear infections
- Yeast and fungal infections
- Ringworm
- Dry mouth
- Fatigue
- Severe seasonal allergies
- Irritability, mood swings, anxiety or depression
- Digestive Issues
Due to its many and varied symptoms, candida is often ignored, undiagnosed or misdiagnosed.
If you have candida or know someone who does, the good news is that there are candida natural treatments. For our candida detox, we will address diet, herbs and supplements, and skin treatment as well.
Mold Toxicity
Mold, like candida, comes from a fungus. Mold can be introduced to our body through spores in the air, or from affected foods. Many types of mold are harmless, but some can cause serious heath problems including:
- Respiratory: coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, asthma attacks, cough with bloody mucus, lung inflammation.
- Skin: Rashes, hives, itchy skin, eczema.
- General: Fatigue, headaches, weakness, dizziness.
- Neurological: Brain fog, difficulty concentrating, memory problems, confusion, irritability, anxiety, seizures, tremors.
- Systemic: Muscle aches, joint pain, digestive issues (diarrhea, cramps), nausea, fever, swollen lymph node.
- Bleeding: Nosebleeds, bleeding gums, coughing up blood
- Cognitive difficulties (brain fog, poor memory, anxiety)
- Pain (especially abdominal pain, but can include muscle pain similar to fibromyalgia)
- Unexplained weight gain or weight loss
- Numbness and tingling in extremities or other areas of the body
- Metallic taste in the mouth
- Vertigo or dizziness
- Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
- Digestive issues (especially limited tolerance to food, persistent bloating)
- Significant fatigue that interferes with daily activities
- Changes in mood
- Excessive thirst and dehydration, bed-wetting in children
- Symptoms that resemble hormone imbalances (hair loss, rashes)
- Exascerbated allergies, sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes.

This “tea” is not to consume, it’s for soaking in the tub. Taking a detox bath a few times a week during this protocol is a great way to help facilitate the flushing of toxins.
The Candida / Mold Diet
Avoiding sugar in all of its various forms is truly key to fighting candida. The candida yeast cells need sugar to build their cell walls, expand their colonies and switch into their more virulent, fungal form.
This is why a low-sugar diet is such a necessary part of your candida treatment. Going forward, you want your diet to be centered on:
- vegetables
- high-quality protien foods (organic meats, eggs, etc)
- gluten-free grains (like brown rice and millet)
Avoiding fruit at this time is also commonly recommended because even though fruit is very healthy, it does get turned into sugar in the body.
In terms of vegetables, you also want to avoid these somewhat sweet, starchy varieties:
- potatoes
- carrots
- sweet potatoes
- yams
- beets
- peas
- parsnips
These vegetables are banned from a strict anti-candida diet because of their high carbohydrate content, but they’re certainly nutrient-dense and can be reintroduced later on, after the cleanse.
Here are the foods to avoid on the candida & mold detox diet.
1. Sugar and Sugar Alternatives
These sweet items feed yeast, so you should avoid them at all costs.
2. Fruit and Fruit Juice
Even though fruit is generally healthy, it’s high in sugar and can make candida worse. Avoid dried fruit as well.
3. Alcohol
Most alcohol contains yeast so it’s not surprising that it produces more of it when consumed. It should be avoided.
4. Grains
Grains break down into sugar and can feed candida, yeast and bad bacteria. Grains are also often contaminated with mold.
5. Vinegar
All types of vinegar should be avoided with candida overgrowth, except for RAW apple cider vinegar. Raw Apple cider vinegar is the only vinegar that provides an alkalizing benefit for the body and actually causes candida to die. Please be sure to read the ingredient lists on any foods becuase vinegar hides in a lot of things. (As do corn, wheat, and dairy!)
6. Peanuts
Peanuts can often carry mold, which also encourages the growth of candida.
7. Dairy
Unless it’s fermented, you ideally want to avoid dairy. Milk contains lactose, which is a sugar. Raw organic Kefir and cheese are OK if you arent otherwise sensitive to dairy.
8. Food Intolerances
Some yeast infections are due to food allergies. Try to avoid foods that cause negative reactions of any kind.
Other foods to avoid include:
- Ice drinks
Foods to eat on the candida / mold diet
Up your intake of fungus killers and support your immune system.
You want to make sure you include the items from my top 10 list below on a daily basis, including:
- Raw Apple cider vinegar– The acid and enzymes in ACV have been shown to help to kill and get rid of excess fungus in the body.
- Green veggies- Leafy green vegetables help alkalize the body, which fights against the acidic nature of fungus overgrowth. Research sugests that greens contain no sugars but have high amounts of magnesium that naturally detox the body, vitamin C to build the immune system, chlorophyll to cleanse the body, B vitamins to energize the body and iron to give the body full support.
- Coconut oil– Coconut oil has antimicrobial properties, and studies show that the combination of lauric acid and caprylic acid found in coconut oil kills off harmful fungus through ingestion and topical application.
- Stevia– We know that sugar feeds candida. That’s why it’s important to use different sweeteners, and stevia is the perfect choice for this detox because it also is known to fight candida. Studies show that not only is stevia an antifungal, anti-inflammatory and antibiotic agent, but it also helps balance the pancreas, which is often compromised when someone has candida. But watch out for stevia sweetners that are cut with other artificial sweeters or with fillers like rice starch.
- Manuka honey– A very powerful natural anit-mmicrobial
- Garlic. It contains a large number of sulphur-containing compounds that have extremely potent, broad-spectrum antifungal properties. Animal studies show that raw garlic benefits the fight against fungus specifically. Homegrown garlic is a key ingredient in my Fire Spice – bit.ly/FireSpicE
- Ground chia and flaxseeds – Polyphenols found in flaxseeds and chia seeds have been found to support the growth of probiotics in the gut and may also help eliminate mold and candida in the body.
- Unsweetened cranberry juice – Cranberry juice without added sugar has been shown to help correct the pH levels of urine, helping prevent the overgrowth of fungi and candida.
- Cultured dairy- kefir has displayed antibacterial and anti-fungal effects in animal studies.
- Fermented veggies– These naturally probiotic rich foods, like sauerkraut, help to detoxify the gut and push out harmful microbes.
- Spices like turmeric and cinnamon- Turmeric contains an active component called curcumin that has been shown to completely inhibit the growth of Candida. Studies have shown that people who supplement with cinnamon generally suffer from less candida overgrowth than those who don’t. Both of these powerhouse spices are key ingredients of my Spiced Lemonade Mix.
- Cooked vegetables- Non-starchy, cooked vegetables — such as broccoli, cauliflower and asparagus — provide valuable nutrients that fight candida.
- Organic Meat- Protein plays a key role in candida. If you get your protein from factory-farmed meats, you could actually feed candida, because it contains antibiotics. Research suggests that foods high in healthy fats and protein protect against candida. That’s why it’s so important to consume only organic, free-range meat. Meat and animal products that aren’t organic contain antibiotic residues, which are a major cause of candida overgrowth. Therefore, conventional animal foods of all types should be avoided at all costs.
- Bone Broth– It benefits so many different aspects of our health, and you can add treating candida to the list. In fact, it’s one of the best food sources to destroy candida due to its positive effects on gut health. You’ll find a recipe for how to make it yourself in our Facebook group, or you can buy it here.
Other Supplements
Lauricidin —
This is an extract that comes from coconut oil. It comes in small pellets which are swallowed by the spoonful. Lauricidin is helpful for breaking down the biofilm that candida live and grown in within our gut. When the biofilm is dissolved, the candida can be flushed out.
S Boulardii —
This is a very specific strain of probiotic that is shown to survive digestion, fight off candida, and heal the gut lining. This is the probiotic you should be using daily durin gthe candida cleanse.
Activated Charcoal — When harmful organisms are dying off within your body, they release toxins which can cause symptoms like brain fog, lethargy, nausea, and rashes. To help ward off these “die-off” reactions, you want to make sure to be drinking LOTS of water, and also take a binder like activated charcoal. Activated charcoal bonds itself to the toxins to keep them from doing damage, and then both are together eliminated from your body.
Additional Skin Care-
Lavender pine tar soap
This healing soap is one of the key factors that helped my son Isaac’s severe eczema, and it’s the perfect support for skin irritated by candida. It’s moisturizing lather and gentle ingredients help soothe the most sensitive and raw skin. It can even be used a shampoo on an irritated scalp.
Made from pine tree resins, pine tar has been shown to be antipruritic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antifungal. These properties make pine tar suitable for the topical treatment of eczema, psoriasis, seborrhoeic dermatitis and other dry, itchy, flaky or inflamed skin conditions. It works by causing the skin to shed dead cells from its top layer and slow down the growth of skin cells.
Lavender contains two inflammation-fighting compounds called linalool and linalyl acetate. A study suggests that these may provide relief for skin issues, such as: eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, itching, rashes, burns, wounds, and acne.

“Aside from feeling great while taking the detox and candida cleanse tinctures and following the dietary guideline, the following month the dentist commented, “Your cleaning and hygiene really improved. No plaque!” Hmm, I didn’t change my brushing+flossing routine and suspected the improvement was related to the tinctures… Now I’m learning about the importance of minerals for the mouth! All the supportive herbs in those tinctures had this amazing side effect of supporting dental health.”
