Description
Did you know that conventional store bought shampoo and conditioner contain silicone? Silicone makes your hair appear smooth and shiny, but only because it’s coating it with gunk. Build-up of silicone on your hair can weigh your hair down and prevent nutrients and vitamins from penetrating the hair cuticles. It can also clog the pores on your scalp, causing breakouts.
Not my products though. My shampoo bar, conditioning rinse, and leave in conditioner are made with organic ingredients that will truly nourish your hair without harmful chemicals.
Now back to those chemicals… here’s some of the nasty stuff that’s in most store bought hair products:
-Parabens
Preservatives that can mimic the hormone estrogen and have been linked to an increased growth of breast cancer cells
-Sulfates
This ingredient is used to get a squeaky clean. Problem is, once rinsed, the sulfates strip your hair and scalp of their natural oils, moisturizers, and color, leaving dryness, flaking, and irritation behind.
-Retinyl palmitate
It’s an artificial vitamin, the ester of retinol combined with palmitic acid. It’s a known skin/scalp irritant that can cause peeling, scaling, redness, and itching.
-Synthetic Fragrances
Products that have “fragrance” on their label contain thousands of hidden chemicals. Some ingredients in fragranced cosmetic products can disrupt the reproductive systems. They can also cause cancer, asthma and make their way into women’s breast milk. Like many ingredients on this list, it is also an irritant to the skin and scalp, which can lead to hair loss.
Time to ditch your chemical filled shampoo and switch to something healthy and nourishing.
*A few of the star ingredients in my Shampoo Bar
Coconut oil
Studies show that coconut oil is effective at reducing symptoms of scalp psoriasis. It nourishes the scalp and hair, while also cleansing. Coconut oil blocks bacteria and irritants from causing damage. It is also naturally antibacterial and antifungal.
Jojoba oil
It helps protect against dryness, breakage, and split ends. This versatile oil contains B vitamins and C and E, as well as copper and zinc, making it a natural cheerleader for strengthening our locks.
Farm fresh eggs
Egg helps infuse hair follicles with much-needed vitamins and minerals. Nourishing the scalp encourages new hair to grow stronger and be less prone to breakage or shedding. And when your hair doesn’t fall out as much, it appears thicker and healthier.
Rosemary
It’s great for stimulating hair growth, and rosemary oil is also used to prevent premature graying and dandruff. It may also help dry or itchy scalp.
*Beneficial ingredients in my Conditioning Hair Rinse
Rice water
It is thought to make the hair smooth and shiny, as well as to help it grow faster. Rice water detangles the hair, makes hair smoother, increases shine, makes hair stronger, and helps hair grow longer.
Fermented fruit infusions
I add juices from fermented apples and fermented citrus fruit peels to this rinse. First of all, they make it smell amazingly sweet, and their gentle acids have great benefits for your hair:
-Can Balance & Soothe Your Scalp
-Will Remove Buildup
-Antimicrobial while Healing a Dry & Itchy Scalp
-Can Reduce Hair Loss & Repair Breakage
-Can Help Your Dye-Jobs Last Longer
But most importantly, it’s necessary to use a gentle acid rinse after using a natural soap based shampoo bar. The soap base is very alkaline and your hair prefers a more acid ph to maintain health and strength, so using this rinse helps reset the ph after cleansing.
*Leave in Conditioner
You’ll want to grab this one too if you have dry or curly hair. I have fine, straight hair, but my ends get dry, so I spritz this just on the ends of my hair after towel drying.
