Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis)
It may boost cognitive function, reduce anxiety, and relieve stress. Lemon Balm can also help you relax enough to get a great nights sleep, but it won’t have you dozing off during the daytime. Taking lemon balm by mouth increases calmness, memory, and alertness in adults under mental stress.
It is proposed that lemon balm may work by increasing gamma-aminobutyric (GABA) levels in the brain. GABA is a mood regulator which works by stopping neurons from becoming overexcited, and low levels of GABA can lead to restlessness and anxiety. Lemon balm significantly reduces excitatory transmission in the brain by inhibiting an enzyme called GABA-T that breaks down GABA, thus increasing the amount of GABA available in the brain. The major compound in lemon balm responsible for this activity is rosmarinic acid, although it is known to work synergistically with other compounds.
Skullcap
Skullcap calms anxiety as a nerve tonic. It’s thought that American skullcap positively impacts mood and reduces anxiety by stimulating GABA, a neurotransmitter that helps calm nerves. Notably, this plant was used in traditional medicine practices as a sedative and treatment for conditions like insomnia and anxiety. The discovery of relatively high quantities of serotonin in skullcap may explain the in vitro study, which found that skullcap binds to serotonin receptors. Skullcap was used formerly for nervous disorders, including hysteria, nervous tension, and epilepsy. It is now used largely as a sedative.
Lobelia
Compounds found in lobelia may also help protect against mood disorders, including depression. Specifically, lobeline may block certain receptors in the brain that play a role in the development of depression. Lobelia may help manage ADHD. It can relieve certain symptoms, including hyperactivity and difficulty focusing, by improving the release and uptake of dopamine in your brain.
